Let me ask you a question: why do people get sick? If you're Western-educated, you'll probably reply that people get sick because they pick up a germ, or because they ate something that was bad for them, or because they were exposed to something 'toxic' in their environment, or they got into an accident, all G-d forbid.
But if you asked a believing Breslev-educated person why people get sick, they'd tell you very simply: people get sick because G-d makes them sick.
In his book 'Hashem Rofecha' (G-d is your doctor) Rav Arush teaches us the following:
"The health of the body depends on the health of the neshama….(so it's crucial for us to know that)… when it comes to healing, there is no such thing as 'teva' or the laws of nature. There is only Hashgacha Pratit, Hashem's Divine Providence."
Rav Arush continues that the state of a person's health is the single biggest manifestation of Hashgacha Pratit there is. Hashem uses health more than any other thing to hint to a person what he needs to fix. "Consequently, the healing of each and every Jew only depends on the teshuva that he makes; and that's the only true path for him to be healed."
While this might sound shockingly radical for Westerners, Eastern medicine has been based on these principles for millennia.
All the genuine alternative healing arts, like acupuncture, acupressure, healing via nutrition, healing via energy medicine, healing via aromatherapy, they all work according to the principle that when a person's energy, (ie, their soul), is blocked, they get spiritually and physically ill.
A person's physical symptoms are just a manifestation of the underlying spiritual issue that needs to be addressed, and they go hand in hand.
Unfortunately, this emuna-based approach to healing has been so wrapped up, covered over and adulterated by avoda zora (literally, idol worship), that it's been practically inaccessible for sincere religious Jews.
Which is where Emunaroma comes in.
Emunaroma combines many alternative healing ideas, tools and practices, (including acupressure, emuna medicine and aromatherapy techniques) in a kosher way, with G-d.
The premise is simple: G-d is making us ill, and G-d can heal us. In order for that to happen, we have to understand where the spiritual energy in our body is blocked; what's blocking it, and then to make the teshuva we need to make to get the block or illness to disappear.
Western medicine is full of pills, operations and medical 'magic bullets' - but devoid of G-d and teshuva. By contrast, emuna-based healing works to ameliorate the physical symptoms with aromatherapy and other alternative healing techniques, while at the same time helping people to start a dialogue with G-d, to find out why He made them sick in the first place.
G-d wants us to heal. He wants us to be healthy and happy. But in order for that to happen, we have to connect back to Him, and to understand that almost any 'lack' in our physical health is just coming to prod us to fix a problem in our spiritual health.
My esteemed colleague, Mrs. Rivka Levy explores these concepts, and others, in much more detail on her fantastic new blog, the Emunaroma blog. I invite you to take a look, and to join Mrs. Levy in putting G-d firmly back into the centre of an authentic Jewish approach to sickness, health and healing.
